詳細紹介:
The Xujiahui Cathedral (also known as St. Ignatius Cathedral) at 158 Puxi Road, designed by W. M. Dowdall, was built with money raised by French Jesuit missionaries since 1896. The project was constructed by a French-owned Shanghai contractor during the period from 1906 to 1910. The cathedral was the first Catholic church established in Shanghai following the Opium Wars, the largest church in Shanghai and the first Western-style church in China. It is a brick-stone building with two spires typical of French Gothic buildings. This five-story church is 83.3m long and 30m wide, with the main altar 44m wide. It has a Basilica cross-shaped floor plan. Vertically, the church is divided into front, middle and back parts, with the choir building above the back part. Horizontally, it has south and north wings. The facade and side elevations all have round rose windows inlaid with stained glass. The cathedral can accommodate more than 3,000 visitors. The east-facing building has a spacious courtyard, exterior walls built of plain red bricks and doors and windows all with pointed arches, a vital feature of Gothic buildings. The hall, the bell tower and the cross add up to 56.6m. The spires are paved with blues stone slates. The bell tower was demolished in 1966 and restored in 1982. The Shanghai Municipal People’s Government designated the cathedral a Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the Municipal Level on September 25, 1989. The State Council named it a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level on March 5, 2013.
