Overview

Overview

Cai Yuanpei's Former Residence in Shanghai is Cai Yuanpei's last residence in Shanghai and the best-preserved Cai Yuanpei's residence in China. The three-storey British garden house wasn't bought by Cai Yuanpei. Mr. Cai never bought a house in his life, to practice his dream of "being a sage who has perseverance but no immovable property". In 1937, Mr. Cai lived here for a short time before moving to Hong Kong because of the Japanese occupation of Shanghai. After Cai Yuanpei passed away in 1940, his family gradually declined to the point that they couldn't make a living or secure a dwelling.
