Shanghai rail services set for expansion
Passengers depart from the Shanghai Railway Station in Jing'an District.

Rail services in Shanghai will expand from April 10 to satisfy the demands of passengers and enable the resumption of work and production, China Railway Shanghai Group announced on Friday.

Starting next Friday, some 500 round-trip train routes will be operated daily at railway stations in Shanghai on working days, and the number will be increased to 517 routes daily on weekends, and 539 on peak days, according to the group.

Among the adjustments, the train service from Shanghai South Railway Station to Hangzhou in neighboring Zhejiang Province will be extended to Zhuji in the same province, and the terminal of a train service from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station will be changed to Wuhan in Hubei Province instead of Daye North in Hubei.

The departure and arrival times on some train services, such as from Shanghai South Railway Station to Zhuji, and from Shanghai Railway Station to Nanyang, Henan Province, will be adjusted as well, according to the group.

An estimated 590,000 passengers are expected to depart Shanghai via train between Friday and April 6, the period of the Qingming Festival, an 87 percent surge compared with the same period last month, the group said.

Most travelers will be people visiting the tombs of relatives, and tourists making short-distance trips in the Yangtze River Delta region, the group said.

The peak is expected on April 4, the day of the Qingming Festival, with 200,000 passenger trips estimated, according to the group.

All rail passengers are required to have their temperatures taken, wear masks and avoid gathering.
