The Royal Workshop of Chinese Brush and Ink

The Royal Workshop of Chinese Brush and Ink is affiliated with Shanghai Zhou Huchen Cao Sugong Calligraphy and Ink Limited Company. The venue houses two national intangible cultural heritage techniques: the Zhou Huchen brush-making technique and the Cao Sugong ink block-making technique. These two techniques are from two "China Time-honored Brands" with a history of over 300 years. The workshop is now a national 4A-level tourist attraction and a demonstration base for the production protection of national intangible cultural heritage. It continues the production of intangible cultural heritage, combining traditional handicraft production with cultural and creative tourism, intangible cultural heritage research and learning, cultural and creative industries, and scientific research. Based on the "intangible cultural heritage + tourism" protection and inheritance model, the workshop actively creates a pen and ink cultural aesthetic space that integrates production, tourism, research and learning, cultural creativity, and scientific research.

Inside the workshop, there are functional areas such as the "Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop," "Ink Model Treasury," "Calligraphy and Ink Cultural and Creative Zone," "Art Exchange Center," "Cultural and Creative Space," "Master Studio," and "Leisure Interactive Bar." The venue vividly showcases the two national intangible cultural heritage techniques of "Cao Sugong ink block-making" and "Zhou Huchen brush-making." Visitors can have face-to-face interactions with craftsmen and directly experience important production processes such as "soaking the ink stick," "making ink blocks," "air-drying," "gilding," and "making brushes." In the History Scroll Hall, visitors can see exhibits of royal brushes and inks, famous brushes and inks, red brushes and inks, calligraphy and painting brushes and inks, and more. They can also see the treasures of the venue, the "largest Ru Yi ink block" and the "longest wolf hair brush." In the ink block-making room, gilding room, and rubbing room, visitors can become craftsmen and personally make their own ink blocks, drawing their favorite words and graphics on the ink surface. They can also enter the Ink Model Treasury to learn the technique of rubbing and appreciate the stories and secrets behind the cultural relics.

The exhibition of intangible cultural heritage, research and learning, and cultural creativity all have strong interactivity. It is not only loved by children but also provides a fascinating and wonderful experience for adults who rarely come into contact with traditional writing methods in their daily lives. They can feel the grand and profound culture contained in pen and ink.
