The Public Building Complex of the Greater Shanghai Plan

The Public Building Complex of the Greater Shanghai Plan was developed to construct the new "Shanghai City" and break the monopoly of Shanghai Public Concession and Shanghai French Concession in the city center. Today, the Wujiaochang area still preserves most of the road network structure and several historical buildings, including the former Shanghai Municipal Government Building, Jiangwan Stadium, former Shanghai Library, former Shanghai Museum, former Shanghai Municipal Hospital, and Shanghai Municipal Institute of Health.

Designed by the renowned Chinese architect Dong Dayou, Jiangwan Stadium was first built in August 1934 and completed in October 1935. It covers an area of 360 mu and was originally the sports stadium of Shanghai, making it the largest comprehensive sports stadium in the country at that time. It consisted of three main buildings: the sports field (athletics track), sports hall, and swimming pool. In 1935, the Republic of China government held the 6th National Games here. Today, Jiangwan Stadium has been transformed into the first sports and leisure park in China, serving as a popular destination for citizens to take walks, exercise, and engage in sports activities. Through offline IP events, sports events, cross-border carnivals, and other diverse experiences, as well as the launch of a series of content columns online, Jiangwan Stadium is gradually becoming a destination for leading trend sports, empowering sports culture, and supporting sports innovation, creating a new healthy lifestyle.

The former Shanghai Library is now the Yangpu District Library. The preservation and renovation of this building follow the principle of "maximum protection and utilization, optimal renewal and regeneration." It restores the remaining buildings, reverts to the original design blueprint, and expands the unbuilt parts in the original design manuscript, fully showcasing the historical features and architectural style of its "Chinese Renaissance" architecture. After the renovation and expansion, the Yangpu District Library reopened to the public in 2018. With its bright yellow glazed tiles, double-eaved hipped roofs, exquisite murals, and magnificent gatehouse, the library, resembling an ancient city tower, has been reborn at the age of over 80. The entire building is adorned with carved beams and painted ceilings, exuding a traditional ancient charm, earning it the reputation of "Little Forbidden City of the Magic City."
