Wukang Mansion

Wukang Mansion, formerly known as the Normandy Apartments, is a French Renaissance-style apartment residence. It is the earliest arcade-style apartment building in Shanghai and has attracted many tourists from home and abroad due to its unique shape resembling a giant ship. The building was invested by the International Savings Association and designed by Laszlo Hudec and was built in 1924. In 1953, it was renamed Wukang Mansion and later housed some celebrities from the cultural and entertainment industry, including Zhao Dan, Qin Yi, and Sun Daolin.

Due to its limited geographical location, the ground floor of the building adopts an arcade style, with a narrow and elongated body resembling a ship. The storefront windows are recessed inward, leaving space for pedestrians. The facade is divided into three horizontal sections, with the first and second floors treated as pedestals with continuous semi-circular arcades and cement imitation stone walls. The third floor features long balconies, while the fourth to seventh floors have small balconies. In addition to a spiral staircase, the building has three elevators for passenger and freight use. Despite undergoing multiple repairs, the elevators in the building still retain the floor indicators with semi-circular pointers used in the mid-20th century, which is quite unique.

Wukang Mansion underwent protective restoration in 2009 and 2019. During this process, experts were invited to the site to conduct detailed research and study on every brick and decorative detail. For example, the texture on the repaired plain brick walls was refined to simulate the effect of raindrops falling vertically, thus reproducing the original appearance of this classic building. It is worth mentioning that the restoration in 2019 made Wukang Mansion the first building in Shanghai to serve as a pilot for the combination of historical building restoration, renovation of old residential buildings, and prevention of high-altitude falling objects. A housing safety management information monitoring system was also installed, enabling the management department to promptly notice any settlement, deformation, or wall cracking.

Wukang Mansion, Wukang Court, Yongle Hui, and other old buildings have been restored and adjusted to become cultural and creative tourism and leisure complexes. In 2022, the Wukang Road Anfu Road block was included in the first batch of national-level tourism and leisure blocks, providing an experiential space for citizens and tourists to get close to the Shanghai-style lifestyle and feel the city's atmosphere while preserving its historical charm. It has created a scene of harmonious living shared by hosts and guests.
