Longhua Martyrs Memorial

In the bustling downtown area of Xuhui District, Shanghai, there is a solemn and dignified Martyrs Cemetery. Many revolutionary martyrs rest here, and countless heroic deeds are written here. This is not only a national patriotic education base, a national key cultural relic protection unit, and a key monument protection unit for martyrs, but also a national first-class museum and a national defense education demonstration base. This is the Longhua Martyrs Memorial in Shanghai.

Between 1927 and 1937, nearly ten thousand revolutionary martyrs were imprisoned in Longhua, and about a thousand communists were publicly or secretly killed, including a large number of early pioneers and leaders of the Party. Currently, the memorial is the resting place of 1,737 revolutionary martyrs, including Chen Yannian, Zhao Shiyan, Luo Yinong, Peng Pai, and other early heroes of the Communist Party. The memorial is also the former site of the Nationalist Party's Songhu Garrison Command and the place where the Longhua revolutionary martyrs were executed, witnessing the brave deeds of numerous revolutionary martyrs shedding blood and adhering to their original aspirations in the early struggles of Shanghai.

As early as 1950, when the remains of the "24 Longhua Martyrs" were excavated in the Longhua area, the older generation of revolutionaries had the desire to establish the Longhua Martyrs Memorial here to commemorate the martyrs. In December 1983, after martyr Zhao Shiyan's wife, Xia Zhixu, made a special visit to Shanghai's Martyrs Cemetery, she wrote a letter calling for the central government to renovate Longhua and turn the whole or a large part of it into a martyrs cemetery. In January 1988, the State Council approved the "Longhua Martyrs Memorial" as a national key cultural relic protection unit. In 1990, the construction project of the Longhua Martyrs Memorial was launched, and in October, Deng Xiaoping personally wrote the name of the park, "Longhua Martyrs Memorial," and Jiang Zemin wrote the inscription, "With unwavering devotion and bloodshed for the people."

As the largest red revolutionary memorial site in Shanghai, the artistic features of the Longhua Martyrs Memorial architecture include the integration of themes, main axes, and three-dimensional buildings, as well as the alternation of "past," "present," and "future." The red rock at the entrance points out the humanistic theme of the memorial with its specific ideological connotations; the memorial hall harmoniously combines four layers of plain granite stairs with a pyramid-shaped blue glass curtain wall, revealing a clear and open artistic conception amidst solemnity and gravity... These architectural elements successfully create a unique memorial atmosphere and make the Longhua Martyrs Memorial a landmark memorial building in Shanghai.
