He named the garden Yuyuan, with yu (豫) meaning “peace” and “gladdening one’s parents.” The garden has many pavilions, terraces, towers, and galleries, which blend harmoniously with scenic chambers, waterside lodges, covered walkways, and bridges. Following the principle that “The works of men should match the works of Heaven,” it has long earned the title of “the premier garden in the southeast of China.” As a cultural icon of Shanghai, the garden is an integrated embodiment of Red culture, Shanghai-style (Haipai) culture, and Jiangnan culture, becoming a must-visit for those Chinese and foreign visitors exploring the art and culture of traditional Chinese gardens.
