Address : Opposite Shuangyong Park, Jing’an District, Shanghai
Introduction:
Sihang Warehouse is a warehouse building located on the north bank of the Suzhou Creek in the southern part of the former Zhabei District of Shanghai, at the northwest corner of the Xizang Road Bridge. The Defense of Sihang Warehouse that took place here revived the morale of Chinese troops and civilians after setbacks in the Battle of Shanghai. During the “8/13” Battle of Shanghai in 1937, Xie Jinyuan led more than 420 officers and soldiers in a determined defense of the warehouse; to mislead the enemy they publicly declared themselves “the Eight Hundred Heroes”. After resisting the invading Japanese forces for four days and nights, the bravery of this isolated unit touched the world and became known in history as the Defense of Sihang Warehouse. To commemorate the battle, the Sihang Warehouse Memorial Hall was built on the original site. On the warehouse’s west wall, an aged surface marked by some 430 bullet holes of various sizes and eight cannon impacts has been professionally restored. This preserved wall witnesses a dramatic and arduous chapter of history that should be remembered—across different times and perspectives, it keeps the spirit of unyielding resistance alive. Sihang Pier is one of the city’s notable “waterfront landmarks”. Behind the pontoon pier stood the former joint warehouses of Fukang and Fuyuan private banks; later the space served as a combined storage facility for Jincheng Bank, Zhongnan Bank, Continental Bank and the Salt Industry Bank—known as the “Guangsan sub-warehouse” of Sihang Warehouse.
