Introduction:
The Shanghai Lu Xun Museum is situated in the southeastern corner of Lu Xun Park in Hongkou District. The museum is a simple, elegant, tranquil two-story courtyard-style building with black roof tiles and white walls. Here, visitors can have a look at Lu Xun’s manuscripts and other rare personal objects, including clothes, articles for daily use, letters, photos and book collection. The exhibits enable visitors to learn about the great writer from many details.
Opened in 1951, the Shanghai Lu Xun Museum is the first memorial hall dedicated to a historical figure after the founding of the P.R.C. Here, visitors will be greeted first by the name of the museum inscribed on the gable. In front of the atrium is the “Baicao Garden” with lush vegetation and walls covered by Fallopia multiflora. Also in the garden are a well, a black awning boat and a stone brandreth, of which the latter two came from Shaoxing, Lu Xun’s hometown.
On the first floor are the “Zhaohua Library,” an exclusive library dedicated to a cultural luminary, and the themed hall “Ben Liu Art Realm.” Thematic cultural exhibitions of varying forms are also often staged on this floor. On the second floor is the main hall, which presents Lu Xun’s life. The in-house artifacts were primarily collected over years or donated by Lu Xun’s wife Xu Guangping and his friends. Such artifacts offer a glimpse into Lu Xun’s manuscripts, clothes, articles of daily use and precious photos. Detailed texts and photos here tell Lu Xun’s life story.
A plaster mask of Lu Xun housed in the museum is a must-see. It was cast by a Japanese friend of Lu Xun from Lu Xun’s face upon his death. The mustache and eyebrows glued on the mask are the only remains of the great thinker. Besides, the museum offers a view of Uchiyama Book Shop and various versions of Lu Xun’s writings.
Moreover, the Tomb of Lu Xun is right inside the adjacent Lu Xun Park. The museum is close to Tian’ai Road and Shanyin Road, both shaded streets with a romantic, literary air worth a walk. The Former Residence of Lu Xun on Shanyin Road was where he lived in Shanghai. It is about seven minutes’ walk from the museum.
