The Longhua Martyrs Cemetery, located at No. 180 West Longhua Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai, is an important monument in memory of revolutionary martyrs for the purpose of passing down the red culture. It is a witness to the city’s revolutionary history. During the period from 1927 to 1937, approximately 10,000 revolutionaries were locked up here, among which about 1,000 members of the CPC were killed publicly or secretly, including Chen Yannian, Zhao Shiyan, Luo Yinong and Peng Pai, among other early forerunners of the CPC. Now, the cemetery is the resting place of 1,737 revolutionary martyrs, whose heroic deeds were closely associated with Longhua’s red culture. Covering about 210,000 square meters, the cemetery comprises four areas, i.e., a square and ceremonial area, an area for worshiping the martyrs, an area of sites and remains, and the Longhua Martyrs Memorial. The cemetery is a National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base, a National AAAA-rated Tourist Attraction, a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the State Level, a National First-Grade Museum and a National Defense Education Demonstration Base.
