The winding river, old streets paved with bluestone, arch bridges and ancient houses, located in the western suburbs of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is a picturesque ink painting of Jiangnan, a "pearl of Jiangnan" embedded on the banks of Dianshan Lake. "Small bridges, flowing water, original Ming and Qing streets" - this ancient town with a history of over 1700 years has caught the attention of many film and television directors. The graceful charm of the water town has appeared on screens and TVs repeatedly, making Zhujiajiao a hotspot for filming both domestically and internationally, earning it the nickname "Hollywood of Shanghai's suburbs". In the list of the top 10 ancient towns favored by inbound tourists released by the China Tourism Academy in 2024, Zhujiajiao Ancient Town in Shanghai is ranked among them, becoming the only ancient town in Shanghai on the list.
The rivers in Zhujiajiao form a network, and 36 ancient bridges still retain their ancient style in the town, among which Fangsheng Bridge is the most famous landmark. Built in the Ming Dynasty, Fangsheng Bridge spans the Caogang River and is 70.8 meters long, making it the longest five-arch stone bridge in the Shanghai area. Standing on the bridge and looking out, the white-walled and black-tiled old houses on both sides of the river are reflected in the water, presenting a tranquil and beautiful view of the ancient town. Taking a wooden boat and cruising along the river is an excellent way to experience Zhujiajiao. The gentle breeze brushes against the face, and the sound of oars hitting the water seems to tell the story of the ancient town. The nine long streets of the ancient town stretch along the river, with thousands of Ming and Qing buildings standing by the water. Fangsheng Bridge is like a rainbow in the water, showcasing the agility and poetic charm of Jiangnan water towns.
Zhujiajiao is not only a tourist destination but also a living museum. It became a market town during the Song and Yuan dynasties, officially established as a town during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, and by the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China era, it was already a well-known commercial and trade town.
The Kezhi Garden in the town is a typical Jiangnan garden, with pavilions and towers arranged in a scattered and artistic manner, and the lake and rockery complementing each other, showcasing the gardening art of Jiangnan. Taking a stroll in the garden, you can almost hear the voices of literati and ink artists reciting poetry in the ancient and simple style of the Jiangnan water town, with "small bridges, flowing water, and households".
