Hidden in the southwest of Shanghai, Liantang Ancient Town has gained fame as the hometown of Chen Yun, a Chinese proletarian revolutionary. Liantang not only retains the poetic charm of Jiangnan ancient towns but also carries the memories of modern Chinese revolution. Here, you can wander through the old streets and alleys with white walls and black tiles, feel the historical pulse of the ancient town, and revisit the turbulent years of the Chinese revolution by visiting the Chen Yun Memorial Hall.
The history of Liantang Ancient Town can be traced back to the Song Dynasty. The typical architectural style of Jiangnan has been well-preserved here. "Narrow streets and opposite buildings, small bridges and flowing water" constitute the unique landscape of Liantang. Several ancient bridges from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties span across the city river, hidden among the weeping willows. Various styles of bridges, with small wooden boats gently gliding by, create ripples with their shadows blending with those of the houses and people. The architectural features of the old houses on both sides of the river are in sharp contrast: Shangtang Street has mostly continuous two-story buildings with storefronts facing the street and warehouses and viewing platforms at the back for storing goods and enjoying the scenery; Xiatang Street consists mostly of residential courtyard homes with rounded gable walls, pink walls, and black tiles, with the front doors along the river.
Located in Liantang Town, Qingpu District, Shanghai, which is Chen Yun's hometown, the Chen Yun Memorail is the only national memorial hall approved by the central government to systematically showcase Chen Yun's life achievements. It has received national honors such as the National First-Class Museum, National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base, National Clean Government Education Base, National Red Tourism Classic Scenic Area, and Shanghai Lifelong Learning Red Culture Experience Base.
Covering an area of 65 mu, the Chen Yun Memorail consists mainly of the main hall, Chen Yun Relics Museum, Bronze Statue Square, Chen Yun's former residence, Chen Yun's handwritten stele corridor, and the Cultural and Creative Street. It comprehensively displays Comrade Chen Yun's life achievements and spiritual demeanor, highlighting his position, role, and contributions in the history of our party.
