Pudong New Area

Museum of Art Pudong

Museum of Art Pudong (MAP), designed by the renowned French architect and Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel, officially opened to the public in 2021. MAP boasts a unique geographical location, with its rooftop terrace offering a stunning view of the bustling skyscrapers in Lujiazui, while across the Huangpu River lies a panoramic display of international architectural wonders.

Located in the core area of Lujiazui Riverside, MAP is a modern building with 6 floors and a height of 30 meters. The building façade and ground are made of Shandong white marble granite, and the interior space and decoration draw inspiration from Malevich's classic geometric lines. Extending westward to the banks of the Huangpu River and connected to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower via the Garden Square to form a 30,000 square meter art museum complex.

The Mirror Hall, also known as the "Great Glass," is the main facade of MAP facing the Huangpu River. It is located on the second and third floors of the museum, consisting of two spaces with a depth of 5 meters, width of 55 meters, and net heights of 6 meters and 12 meters respectively. Jean Nouvel introduced the concept of the fourth dimension (time and space) from Marcel Duchamp's work "The Large Glass" into the architecture. The Great Glass can present different landscapes as time passes and can also serve as a stage for artists.

MAP invites top art museums and artists from around the world to collaborate, providing visitors with a precious experience of enjoying world art treasures without leaving Shanghai. Since its opening, MAP has held exhibitions such as "Light: Works from Tale’s Collection," "Cai Guo-Qiang: Odyssey and Homecoming," and a large-scale spectacle installation "Encounters with the Unknown" specially created by artist Cai Guo-Qiang for the Central Hall. It has also showcased "Joan Miró: Women·Birds·Stars", the first major solo exhibition of the renowned Chinese contemporary artist Xu Bing in Shanghai, and the exhibition "Realm of Water" jointly developed with the Musée du Quai Branly and the François Schneider Foundation. In the future, MAP will continue to introduce artworks from top museums, museums, and artists from around the world.
