China Art Museum

Fiery red, bright and dazzling, the China Art Museum, formerly known as the China Pavilion, was one of the iconic buildings of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Its exterior design, titled "Eastern Crown, Flourishing China," expresses the spirit and temperament of Chinese culture. As a large-scale museum of modern and contemporary art with a collection of nearly 20,000 artworks, it was originally established in 1956 as the Shanghai Art Museum, one of the earliest art museums in New China. In 2012, the Shanghai Art Museum relocated to the China Art Palace at the Shanghai World Expo and officially changed its name.

The building stands at a height of 63 meters and covers an area of 167,000 square meters. It is divided into the National Pavilion and the Regional Pavilion. The National Pavilion has a majestic and powerful shape, resembling a crown reaching for the sky, symbolizing the granary of the world. The base of the Regional Pavilion gathers crowds, symbolizing the prosperity of the nation and the richness of the four directions. The "Chinese Red" exterior of the pavilion is adorned with the 24 solar terms in seal script, showcasing the beauty of art, strength, tradition, and modernity, and interpreting the profound and extensive Chinese culture.

The exhibition area inside the pavilion covers 64,000 square meters and is divided into 27 exhibition halls. It has created a cultural and artistic activity center, gathering various values such as culture, art, and leisure, and has become a milestone in the history of art development in Shanghai. The permanent multimedia version of the famous painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" is displayed in Hall 5 at 49-meter high. It adopts a panoramic and dynamic form, with a total length of 128 meters and a height of 6.5 meters. Based on the original work, it is enlarged by nearly 30 times and cycles between day and night every 4 minutes, vividly reproducing the bustling scenes of the capital city of Bianjing during the Northern Song Dynasty. The artwork combines sound, light, and electric effects, using 12 large-scale projection devices of film quality and 8 smart spots. During the day, there are 691 figures, and at night, there are 377 figures, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in a cross-temporal and cross-space dialogue between the past and the present.

In addition to exhibitions, the China Art Museum also regularly organizes public welfare projects such as art education activities and aesthetic lectures related to exhibitions. Through lively and vivid forms, it delivers art education to the public. The clay sculpture fairy tale workshop, rainbow-colored lightweight soil painting, and other activities not only provide children with an excellent opportunity for hands-on practice and the cultivation of creativity and artistic thinking, but also offer a sensory journey full of humanistic care.
