In 1922 it became Shanghai Municipal Council Band and was acclaimed as the "Best Orchestra in the Far East". It was officially named Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in 1956. The orchestra has played a significant role in music history: in addition to widely introducing Western repertoire, it was among the first to perform Chinese orchestral works and has cultivated Chinese musical talent and symphony audiences. The orchestra has an extensive record of international collaboration and performances, appearing in world‑class halls such as Carnegie Hall and the Berlin Philharmonie.
