"The Xujiahui Origin scenic area, a 4A national tourist attraction, brings together an array of cultural and tourism landmarks, including the St. Ignatius Cathedral (also known as the Xujiahui Cathedral)—the grandest church in the Far East; the 140yearold Xujiahui Observatory (now the Shanghai Meteorological Museum); Xujiahui Bibliotheca (also known as Bibliotheca Zi-Ka-Wei), Shanghai’s oldest surviving modern library with over 600 years of history; the Pathe Villa, where the national anthem March of the Volunteers was recorded; the Shanghai Film Museum; Shanghai T’ou-Sè-Wè Museum; and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Established in the 1980s, the Xujiahui Business Circle was the first business district in Shanghai to adopt a ringshaped development anchored around a metro station. At its heart stands Metro City, crowned by a 41.2metrediameter crystal sphere whose distinctive form and dazzling night illumination have made it a landmark of southwest Shanghai.
Metro City pioneered the concept of an indoor vertical cultural block—“a street within a building”—with each floor offering its own cultural theme, distinctive style, and cluster of businesses. On the fifth floor, Theatre Above, the SFC International Cinema, and Popular Bookmall come together to create a onestop cultural experience that blends live theatre, cinema, and reading.
Theatre Above is a bespoke boutique playhouse designed specifically for Metro City. As Shanghai’s first resident theatre inside a major shopping mall, it serves as a fashionable stage art hub. In collaboration with Asia’s renowned theatre master Stan Lai, it has staged over 700 performances, including the classic play Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land, and has established itself as another cultural landmark for the city.
Metro City is home to a distinctive collection of firststore cultural and creative trendsetting brands, including Donguri Republic, the official Studio Ghibli specialty shop; Japanese lifestyle giant LOFT; museum&more, which offers exclusive world-class museum IP resources; and Planet E, China’s first rooftop football pitch in a shopping mall, created in partnership with Shanghai Juss Sports Development Group Co., Ltd. Its nighttime cultural and tourism offerings continue to expand and evolve, from the pioneering indoor Wufan Night Market to the Coffee Lifestyle Festival at Metro Bay on the outdoor plaza. The upcoming second edition of the Wufan Night Market will bring together more than 40 popular brands, adding yet another burst of lively streetmarket energy."
