Vienna Radio Symphony Returns to Shanghai for New Year Celebration

2025-12-17

The ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra will present two concerts in Shanghai on January 6 and 7, striking a high note to the city's 2026 New Year celebrations.

Last year, the Austrian orchestra also performed at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center together with versatile musician Wayne Marshall. This year's two concerts will be under the baton of French conductor Jérémie Rhorer, a pioneering figure in early music and opera who is also the founder and music director of the ensemble Le Cercle de l'Harmonie.

Johann Strauss II's works will run through both concerts, creating a traditional festive atmosphere. The programs include enduring classics from the Golden Hall repertoire, such as the Overture to "Die Fledermaus," "Emperor Waltz," "Tritsch-Tratsch Polka," "Pizzicato Polka," and "Pleasure Train Polka."

Other pieces include the dramatic and historically rich Overture to "Egmont," as well as two heavyweight works: Schubert's "Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished)" and Beethoven's "Symphony No. 7."

Classics by French composers Offenbach, Gounod, and Bizet will also be featured, continuing the Vienna Orchestra's preference for French opera and adding a touch of romantic softness to the performances.

"The Blue Danube" will serve as the grand finale for both days of the concerts, joining the audience in taking the festive atmosphere to its peak.
