2026-02-28

Fotografiska Shanghai and Three Shadows Xiamen Photography Art Center will jointly present a solo exhibition by No. 223 (aka Lin Zhipeng) between March 13 and June 14.

Titled "Under the Sunlight, There is no True Intimacy," the exhibition focuses on the two-decade photographic practice of Lin, a representative figure in contemporary Chinese image-making.

No. 223, Blossom Mode, 2023, Photography with archival pigment print.

Featuring over a hundred works that explore how desire functions as a subversive daily practice, the exhibition marks the artist's first Shanghai tour following his presentation at Three Shadows Xiamen, systematically tracing his photographic practice through these works, and initiating a profound dialogue on intimate experience, visual resistance, and bodily narrative.

The exhibition's title reflects the artist's longstanding conviction: beneath the mundane surface of daily life lies a hidden geography – one mapped by the body, shaped by desire, and colored by emotion. With a lens that is at once detached and lyrical, he drifts through city corners, fragments of nature, and intimate spaces, gathering the fleeting, the overlooked, and the unnameable moments that slip through the cracks of ordinary perception.

In contemporary visual culture, desire operates as an ambiguous force of resistance, suspended between social constraint and personal freedom. This exhibition centers on that tension, examining how desire transforms into a quiet subversion of the everyday.

No. 223 is not merely a pseudonym – it is a position: a rejection of fixed identity, a commitment to speaking in both images and words. While social media trades in instant gratification, his work moves with deliberate slowness, restoring the viewer's sensitivity to their own lived experience.
