These artists have managed to transform the notion of textile art as mere decorative handworks into an independent field of art; they have worked for decades toward their cause, and have allowed the art of weaving and knitting to stand tall in the stage

Welcome Sheila Hicks and Shi Hui, two esteemed individuals who are in the midst of rewriting the boundaries and definition of art, as they hold their joint exhibition "Material Matters" at the West Bund Museum from April 17 to August 2.

The exhibition is themed around materials, as the artists are daring the people to reimagine what art is, as they push to transform handicraft as an independent, contemporary study of art. The two artists, from distinctly different backgrounds, culture and upbringings, have met along the path toward the same goal as they attempt to redefine some of the limitations placed on art, and prepare to usher in a new era of art.

With 60 years of experience in the field of international fiber arts, American artist Sheila Hicks is looking to extend her net of influence further through her work with fiber in her first-ever exhibition in China, as she showcases her works mainly themed around knitting, weaving and anything related to textile works.

The exhibition will also present to visitors the creative of Shi Hui, an esteemed local artist with a unique perception of how materials influence art. Her works will feature all sorts of materials, from bamboo to cotton to hemp, and how they interact to form connections with nature and body perceptions. Light and heavy, rigid and flexible, accidental and incidental, Shi's work with these seemingly conflicting elements has juxtaposed itself to form a cohesive art narrative.

Date: April 17-August 2

Venue: West Bund Musuem

西岸美术馆

Address: 2600 Longteng Ave
