Remarkable yet often overlooked are the ordinary architectural works that enabled Hong Kong to stabilize, prosper, and realize its global ambitions. Despite their profound social and cultural significance, many of these buildings remain under-documented and underrepresented in international architectural discourse.
"Projecting Future Heritage: A Hong Kong Archive" is part of an international exhibition series exploring cultural memory, speculative preservation, and the evolving identity of Hong Kong through the lens of architecture. Presented in cities around the world, the project invites audiences to reconsider how everyday built environments shape collective histories and future narratives.
The Shanghai exhibition continues the vision established by Hong Kong's acclaimed presentation at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, reintroducing the archive of "future heritage" to new audiences. The project highlights the public infrastructures and civic spaces that embody the city's core values amid challenges of density, land scarcity, and rapid economic growth.
As the concluding chapter of this exhibition journey, the Shanghai presentation features a filmic documentation of the complete archive of Hong Kong's public architecture. Through visual narratives and archival research, visitors will gain deeper insight into the everyday lives, social systems, and common infrastructures that formed the literal and cultural foundations of the city. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore how seemingly ordinary buildings became enduring frameworks for Hong Kong's development and identity.
