As autumn breezes sweep through riverside alleys, Zhujiajiao Ancient Town in Qingpu District has unveiled its annual "Artistic Charm of Jiangnan" seasonal event, bringing traditional opera, martial arts and folk performances out of enclosed theaters and into the open water town scenery.

Running through September 30, the immersive cultural program transforms the water town's rivers, alleys and historic pavilions into natural stages. Positioned as China's top inbound tourism gateway to ancient towns, Zhujiajiao showcases authentic Jiangnan aesthetics to international visitors through boundary-free traditional performances.

The highlight of the event is the waterborne rendition of The Peony Pavilion, one of China's most celebrated Kunqu Opera classics. A reed-decorated art boat glides slowly along the waterway of Xijing Street. Without fixed seats or enclosed stages, the flowing river serves as the performance platform, while ancient pavilions and waterside corridors form a natural backdrop.

Elegant and melodious Kunqu melodies blend traditional Chinese opera art with real pastoral scenery. The open-air performance delivers authentic Chinese romantic aesthetic, allowing global tourists to experience classical Jiangnan culture in an immersive setting.
