Oldest bridge on Huangpu River to reopen in six months

The last piece of the bridge surface, 100 tons in weight, is lifted into place early Monday morning.

Songpu Bridge, the oldest bridge on the Huangpu River, will be open to vehicle traffic again by the end of June next year, Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said on Monday.

A revamp of the 43-year-old, two-level bridge in Songjiang District started in July 2017. Work on the lower level, for pedestrian and non-motor vehicles, was completed at the end of last year.

On Monday morning, the last piece of the new bridge surface on the upper level, for motor vehicles, was installed. The new surface still has to be treated before the bridge can reopen.

The project expanded the surface of the original bridge, which is a part of the G320 Expressway.

After the bridge is fully accessible next year, further improvement work will be done, according to the bureau.
