The original 30th-anniversary edition of "Chicago" will grace the stage of Shanghai's Majestic Theater from November 5 to 8, bringing audiences an immersive feast of jazz song and dance. It is also part of the production's worldwide 30th-anniversary tour.
Based on two real crime trials, "Chicago" is the longest-running American musical in Broadway and West End history. Delivered with signature black humor, the musical tells the absurd story of two murderers, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who evade the death penalty and rise to fame through the manipulation of a shrewd lawyer and sensational media hype. It offers a sharp satire of judicial corruption and media sensationalism.
The musical has received over 50 coveted awards, including six Tony Awards, five Drama Desk Awards, two Olivier Awards and one Grammy Award. To date, it has staged more than 36,000 performances in 38 countries, hailed by more than 35 million people.
Unlike many blockbuster musicals defined by lavish visuals, "Chicago" is famous for its extremely minimalist stage design, featuring virtually no elaborate sets or large props. Dancers deliver most of their iconic choreography using merely chairs, hats and steel frames, while the live band is integrated into the onstage performance. This avant-garde "Less is more" stage style earned the 1996 revival greater acclaim than the original 1975 production.

This year celebrates the 30th anniversary of the musical's groundbreaking Broadway revival. Instead of reinventing the classic, the 30th-anniversary edition remains true to the original 1996 revival version, delivering an authentic, dignified presentation of the time-honored theatrical legacy.
Its star-studded cast includes Sarah Soetaert, Djalenga Scott, Dan Burton and Jenny Fitzpatrick. Through distinctive humor and satire, their impressive performances will explore thought-provoking themes of human desire, betrayal and justice.
