HiShorts! Short Film Season Opens with Myth-Inspired Animation Showcase

2026-03-27

The screen comes alive at Shanghai Art Museum this Saturday as the "Art Film In Art Museum" salon returns with HiShorts! Short Film Season opens a three-month journey into some of the most imaginative short films today.

The first session sets the tone with an animation focus under the theme "Reimagining Myth in the Present." Eight short films unfold across folklore, fantasy, and contemporary storytelling, where ancient figures step into modern life, surreal landscapes blur the line between dream and memory, and familiar cultural symbols are reinterpreted through bold visual language.

From a kitchen god navigating a hyper-modern heaven, to classic-inspired tales filled with illusion and mystery, to quiet, poetic reflections on growth and belonging, each work feels like a fragment of a larger, evolving mythology. Traditional techniques like shadow puppetry meet experimental animation, creating a layered viewing experience that feels both rooted and unexpected.

More than a screening, this is a way of seeing differently. As the films play out like "moving paintings," the museum itself becomes part of the narrative, inviting audiences to slow down, observe, and connect.

Reservations open on March 25 at 12pm via the official Shanghai Art Museum channel (上海美术馆|中华艺术宮) WeChat account. Spots are limited, so early booking is recommended.

Date: March 28, 2pm-4pm

Venue: Shanghai Art Museum 上海美术馆

Address: 205 Shangnan Rd 上南路205号
