What kind of experience will it bring us when Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin "arrive in Shanghai"? Recently, Qukan Art Museum presents the opening exhibition - "Master Builders: Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin Academic Document Exhibition". With five major exhibition units and nearly 400 precious documents... take you back on the path of the masters.
Has a deep connection with Shanghai
Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin have deep and extensive connections with Shanghai. Lin Huiyin left her educational imprint at the Patriotic School in Hongkou District when she was young. In 1944, Liang Sicheng was appointed as the Deputy Director of the "War Zone Cultural Relics Preservation Committee" and compiled the "Catalog of War Zone Cultural Relics Protection", which included Shanghai's Longhua Temple Pagoda, the ancient Yuyuan Garden, the City God Temple Garden, the Xujiahui Cathedral and Observatory, among others, reflecting advanced awareness of architectural preservation.
The first group of outstanding Chinese architects in Shanghai, such as Zhao Shen, Chen Zhi, Tong Jun, Zhuang Jun, Zhang Bi, etc., were either friends of Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin during their studies at the University of Pennsylvania, or students of the architecture departments at Northeastern University and Tsinghua University established by the two. The academic exchanges between them and Liang Sicheng also provided a lot of inspiration and ideas for the modernization of Chinese architecture, jointly creating the brilliance of modern architecture in Shanghai and making Shanghai an indelible important chapter in the history of Chinese architecture.
Precious exhibits make their debut.
Liáng Sīchéng and Lín Huīyīn are versatile figures in the Chinese architectural community, making outstanding and even pioneering contributions in many important areas such as architectural history, cultural heritage preservation, urban planning, architectural design, and architectural education. The exhibition is divided into five main sections: "Studying Abroad," "Architectural Society," "Planning and Preservation," "Architectural Design," and "Architectural Education," with 19 core exhibits connecting the life of the two masters. The exhibition, themed "Pillars and Beams," features nearly 400 precious exhibits, including manuscripts, drawings, sketches, survey drafts, typewritten drafts, archives, certificates, early editions of works, images, recordings, and other rich forms of documents, many of which are rare original pieces or high-precision replicas, making them highly valuable.
Two exhibits are particularly worth noting. One is a letter written by Lin Huiyin to Liang Qichao in Shanghai in September 1928, which is being publicly displayed for the first time, offering the audience a new glimpse into the inner world of this extraordinary woman. In 2025, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the publication of "Constructing French Style" (by Tao Xiang), a monumental work in the history of Chinese architecture edited and published by the architectural master Zhu Qiyin and the book collector Tao Xiang. This work was originally gifted by Zhu Qiyin to Liang Qichao, and then passed on to Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin, becoming the academic origin of Liang-Lin architectural history research. Liang Sicheng devoted his entire life to interpreting "Constructing French Style." In his later years, he documented his research findings in the "Annotations on 'Constructing French Style'" archive. This precious manuscript is also being showcased to the public for the first time as an important exhibit in this exhibition.
