An exhibition titled "Shanghai, Shanghai! " has opened at the Shanghai Film Museum to mark the 120th anniversary of Chinese cinema.

Hosted by Shanghai Film Group, it is the largest exhibition of the museum since its opening in 2013. A total of 761 exhibits are showcased across various sections, presenting the evolution of the city's film industry and its iconic works in different periods of time.

The exhibition also complements the museum's permanent displays and features lots of newly unveiled items, such as a 120-second tribute video to " Dingjun Mountain" (1905), regarded as the birth of Chinese cinema.

Film posters of classic movies

At the turn of the 20th century, Shanghai's strategic location and modern urban landscape provided fertile ground for the introduction and early development of cinema. The city soon rose to be one of Asia's most influential hubs for film culture.

The exhibition presents these achievements with rich historical documents, relics and immersive reconstructions. The highlights include rare film comic strips, vintage program notes, and a 35mm Lianhua camera used in the 1930s in the making of classics such as "Three Modern Ladies" and "The Goddess."
