City's history, culture displayed at Pudong airport

An exhibition about Shanghai's history and culture is being presented near the No. 89 boarding gate of the T2 terminal of Pudong International Airport.

A number of exhibitions about Shanghai’s culture, history and architecture have been installed at the Pudong airport to showcase the city’s image to global travelers.

A main exhibition is being presented near the No. 89 boarding gate of the T2 terminal of Pudong International Airport. It features the city’s landmark structures such as the Shanghai Tower, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Shanghai World Financial Center.

It is part of a serial exhibition about the past, present and future of the city. The ongoing exhibition about “today’s Shanghai” mainly displays the rapid development of the metropolitan city, according to the Shanghai Airport Authority.

A corridor resembling the city’s unique shikumen, or stone-gate buildings, has also been created. Visitors can interact with a projection of the city’s iconic buildings and landmarks while walking through the corridor. Most of the city’s unique architectural styles have been involved in the art installation, the authority said.

The Museum of Pudong Airport has also launched a new exhibition with over 100 examples of old daily commodities that were once popular among local households. They include powder boxes, floral water, various daily certificates, old postcards and refrigerators.

The new exhibition aims to rekindle the memories of local citizens while also displaying the traditional lifestyle of locals to other travelers, the airport authority said.

The "Fabulous Shanghai" exhibition has also been newly installed at the taxi waiting areas of the T2 terminal. Travelers can see landmark buildings on both sides of the Huangpu River while waiting for taxis. Films introducing the city’s sightseeing attractions are displayed as a preview for tourists, according to the airport.

“The exhibitions are part of efforts to develop the Pudong airport as not only a global transport hub but also a gateway to the city,” an official with the airport authority said.

The Pudong airport handled about 74 million passengers from across the world in 2018. With the opening of its new satellite terminal, the world’s largest, the airport can now handle 80 million passengers annually.
