Adaptation of West End Play Presents Love Experiment in the Multiverse

2025-12-14

The adaptation of West End Play "Constellations" made its Shanghai debut this week, introducing audiences to a series of love experiment in the multiverse.

British playwright Nick Payne got inspiration from interesting sources, including a documentary about bees and the "multiverse" theory in physics literature, before he skillfully weaved them into a story about love and possibilities.

The story follows the romantic relationship between physicist Marianne and beekeeper Roland, who meet at a party.

In the myriad possibilities of parallel universes, their life paths intersect time and again: in one universe, they fall in love at first sight; in another, they pass each other by, never to meet again. In some universes, they love, quarrel, betray, and part ways; in others, they stay together, accompany each other, and face life's cruelest trials side by side.

After its premiere in London in 2012, the play quickly gained attention from local media for its innovative narrative and profound themes.

The play premiered in London in 2012.

Although there have been many adaptations of the original play, Han Zhiyi, director of this latest version, insisted on presenting it according to the original version's structure.

"I believe the original approach resonates most deeply with the audience," she said. "In this era of great uncertainty, every choice we make has the potential to lead us in entirely different directions in life."

The creators hope that by showcasing the various possibilities within the same story, audiences will be inspired to imagine and contemplate their own lives.
