In the 5th year of the Guangxu era (1879), Samuel Isaac Joseph Schereschewsky, Bishop of the American Church Mission, bought 85 mu of land in Wujiazhai in Shanghai’s western suburbs, where he created the Saint John’s College. The college was registered in the United States of America and renamed St. John’s University in the 32nd year of the Guangxu era (1906). Its buildings are mostly a mix of Chinese and Western styles. The extant buildings, well-preserved, primarily include the St. John’s Hall, the Low Library and the Yen Hall. These buildings were named Outstanding Historic Buildings of Shanghai on February 15, 1994, registered as Immovable Cultural Heritage in Changning District on December 22, 2003, and designated a Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the Municipal Level in Shanghai on April 4, 2014.
