Introduction:
Xu Guangqi (1562-1633), courtesy name Zixian and art name Xuanhu, was a Shanghai native who was a presented scholar of the late Ming Dynasty. He made it to such top positions as Grand Protector of the Crown Prince, Minister of Rites and Grand Secretary of the Wenyuan Library. Xu was buried in today’s Guangqi Park in Xujiahui in 1641. He introduced Western science and technology to China and made outstanding contributions in such areas as mathematics, astronomy, agriculture and military. Xu is billed as a patriotic scientist of the late Ming Dynasty and the first person to facilitate cultural exchange between China and the West.
The Xu Guangqi Memorial Hall at No. 17 Nandan Road was renovated for the ex-situ protection of “South Chunhua Hall,” a Ming Dynasty mansion. Covering more than 400 square meters, this memorial hall has an exhibition area of more than 220 square meters, which is divided into four sections, i.e., Global Vision, Scientific Spirit, Patriotism and Lofty Sentiments. The hall houses a body of invaluable information about Xu Guangqi, including portraits, manuscripts, literature and writings, which shows the practical relevance and contemporary value of Xu’s spirit.
