Introduction：
The Soong Ching Ling Memorial Residence is located in a quiet corner on the bustling Huaihai Road in Shanghai, the hometown of Soong Ching Ling. The residence comprises the Soong Ching Ling Heritage Museum, a garage and a main building. The main building, where Soong lived for a long time, was in the middle of the compound, with gardens and lawns in front and at back and surrounded by more than 30 century-old camphor trees. Soong Ching Ling had a special liking for the camphor tree, as described in an article titled “Camphor Trees in the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling” in the textbook Chinese Language (Volume 8) published by Phoenix Education Publishing Ltd. This creamy-white residence was originally the private villa of a German national. Soong worked and lived here for nearly 15 years from 1949 to 1963. It was a vital venue where Soong participated in state affairs, leaving behind many precious historical moments and many artifacts.
Stepping into the residence, visitors will first be greeted by a white statue of Soong Ching Ling. Behind the statue is the Soong Ching Ling Heritage Museum, which houses more than 15,000 artifacts of Soong, including photos, correspondences, her university diploma, books, articles of daily use and office items, gifts from state events, personal belongings of her relatives and Sun Yat-sen’s seals carefully kept by Soong after many hardships.
Right beside the Heritage Museum is a garage, where two cars are parked, one “Hongqi” sedan Soong used after she was transferred from Beijing to Shanghai and the other a “ZIM” sedan as a gift from Joseph Stalin.
The main building in the south side remains as it was when Soong lived here. On the ground floor are a lobby, a living room, a dining room and a library. On the lobby wall hangs a traditional Chinese painting titled “Galloping Horse,” a gift from Xu Beihong. On the wall at the back of the living room is a portrait of Dr. Sun. On the second floor are bedrooms and offices, where a set of rattan-wood furniture was part of the dowry given by her parents, and the sofas and the tea table once accompanied Dr. Sun.
