Introduction: Gaoqiao, a Famous Historical and Cultural Town in China, boasts a long history, profound culture and unique cultural landscapes. Among the many cultural heritage sites in Gaoqiao are the Tomb of Huang Yu, Shunji Nunnery and Fachang Temple of the Song Dynasty, as well as the Imperial Stele of the Yongle Era, the Old Baoshan City and Shuangxiao Neighborhood of the Ming Dynasty. Early residents in Gaoqiao lived by water and built streets along rivers, making Gaoqiao an ancient water town typical of Jiangnan charm. The unique geography of Gaoqiao, encircled by rivers and the sea on three sides and at a chokepoint of the Yangtze and Huangpu rivers, made it a place of military importance in history. Also, Gaoqiao was historically a strategic seaside town by virtue of its strong river and sea culture. After Shanghai became a treaty port, Gaoqiao emerged as a well-known town typical of Shanghai style (or haipai) due to the heavy influence of Shanghai-style culture from the adjacent downtown Shanghai. This museum has a collection of more than 600 exhibits, most of which came from local private collectors. These exhibits, close and relevant to Gaoqiao, to the people and to daily life, epitomize Gaoqiao’s history of approximately 1,000 years and comprehensively and systematically present various aspects of Gaoqiao, including history, culture, production, social life, mores and folkways. This museum was designed to present local history and culture, protect cultural heritage, promote patriotism and a love for hometown, boost the national spirit and move the ancient town of Gaoqiao toward a brighter future.
