Introduction: From April 25, 2024, a special exhibition “All that Glitters: Chinese Cloisonné as a Gift from Robert Chang’s Collection” will be held in the fourth-floor exhibition hall of the Shanghai Museum (People’s Square Branch). This exhibition is organized to express gratitude towards the renowned collector Mr. Robert Chang for his two generous donations, celebrating his philanthropic act of sharing private collections with the public and his profound affection for his homeland. Admission to the exhibition is free of charge. Cloisonné enamel, known as “Jingtailan” in Chinese, is one of China’s most distinguished special metal crafts. The term “Jingtailan” originated during the Ming Dynasty’s Jingtai period (1450-1456), when this craft reached its technical zenith, producing exceptionally exquisite artworks. The designation first appeared in archival records of the Imperial Workshops in the Qing Dynasty. This intricate craft involves soldering flattened copper wires to form decorative patterns on a copper body, filling the compartments with colored vitreous enamel pastes, followed by firing, polishing, and gilding processes. In 2023, Mr. Chang donated 32 sets comprising 46 pieces of cloisonné ware to the Shanghai Museum. Recently, he has made an additional donation of 8 groups totaling 9 pieces. The current exhibition showcases 55 precious cloisonné works from Mr. Chang’s donations, representing the full scope of his generous contributions.
