Qibao Ancient Town has a long history, dating back to the Southern Song Dynasty, and has a history of nearly a thousand years. Qibao Old Street, located in the center of the town, is the core of the ancient town. On both sides of the street, there are many ancient buildings and historical relics, such as Qibao Temple and ancient residences. Qibao Temple is the most famous Buddhist temple in the town, with a history that can be traced back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, and it holds profound religious and cultural significance.
There is a folk belief that Qibao possesses "Seven Treasures," namely the Golden Lotus Sutra, the Dipping Bell, the Flying Buddha, the Divine Tree, the Golden Rooster, the Jade Chopsticks, and the Jade Axe. Today, inside the Qibao Bell Tower located in the Clock Tower Square of Qibao Ancient Town, visitors can explore the historical origins of this ancient town in the Jiangnan region, especially the glorious history of the Qibao cotton weaving industry, which was known as the "finest cotton fabric in the world."
Qibao Ancient Town is famous for its beautiful natural scenery. It is surrounded by small rivers and wetlands, with a developed water system and numerous bridges, creating a picturesque water town landscape. Strolling through the ancient town, visitors can experience the elegant architecture of "blue stone slabs, white walls, and black tiles" harmoniously coexisting with the shimmering water surface.
Qibao Ancient Town is not only a witness to history but also an important base for cultural heritage. The arts and crafts stores, tea houses, and snack stalls in the ancient town showcase the local unique handicrafts and culinary culture. Traditional snacks such as Qibao Tofu have attracted countless visitors to taste. In recent years, the ancient town has hosted a series of events such as the Cricket Festival, Shadow Puppetry Festival, and Fu Goat Festival, and in 2023, it launched the new cultural and tourism brand "Qixiang Yaji."
Qibao is also home to the Zhang Chongren Memorial Hall, dedicated to the sculptor Zhang Chongren. Zhang Chongren studied art in Europe and became acquainted with Belgian cartoonist Hergé. Fans of "The Adventures of Tintin" know that Zhang Chongren was the inspiration for the character "Zhang" in "The Blue Lotus" and "Tintin in Tibet."
