Introduction:
Shanghai Chongming Dongping Forest Tourism Resort is located in the central-northern part of Chongming Island, China’s third-largest island, and is being developed around Dongping National Forest Park, a national AAAA tourist attraction. The park is characterized by its seclusion, tranquility, elegance and wilderness, home to more than 80 tree species and extensive stands of dawn redwood (Metasequoia), often praised as “living fossils”. Forest coverage reaches 90%. The park officially opened to the public in 1989; in 1993 it was named Dongping National Forest Park by the Ministry of Forestry; in 1997 it was selected as one of “Shanghai’s Top Ten New Tourism and Leisure Spots”; in 2002 it was rated a national AAAA forest park by the China National Tourism Administration; in 2004 it was designated a “National Agricultural Tourism Demonstration Site” by the same administration, and in August 2006 it was approved by the National Forestry Administration as one of the first national forest parks authorized to use China’s official National Forest Park emblem.
The resort hosts a wide variety of colorful annual festivals — including the Chongming Flower Festival, Forest Music & Barbecue Camping Festival, Red Flower Festival, Picnic Festival, Yiqin Garden Wetland Summer, and the Summer Fun Season — catering to different groups, time periods, and year‑round vacation needs, and fostering integration of the resort’s overall cultural‑tourism resources. During the 10th China Flower Expo in 2021, with the Expo’s South Garden as the emphasis, the display functions of Dongping National Forest Park were significantly enhanced. The 2023 Chongming Flower Festival, themed “Changes in the New Era, Blossoming New Life,” covered a display area of 480,000 m², featured more than 600 varieties of flowers and over 2.5 million plants, and presented a rich palette including a fragrant flower promenade, colorful flower bands, vast seas of blooms, charming flower gardens, colorful‑hued floral landscapes, and artistic flower galleries. During the festival, Dongping National Forest Park welcomed 117,000 visitors, a 31.5% increase compared with the same period in 2019. These events help establish a regionally distinctive ecological tourism festival brand that aligns with Chongming’s ecological and cultural tourism realities and contributes to regional economic and social development.
The Shanghai Chongming Dongping Forest Tourism Resort leverages Dongping National Forest Park—one of East China’s largest manmade plain forests—to develop a composite wellness tourism destination that integrates ecological therapy, sportsoriented wellness, and culturally rooted restorative experiences. The resort has a forest coverage rate of 90%, and the park’s air carries up to 20,000 negative ions per cm3, earning it the reputation of a “natural oxygen bar”. The resort deeply integrates ecological resources with the health industry, offering naturebased therapies such as forest yoga, tai chi morning exercises, and forest bathing. Mature outdoor programs—cycling, camping, and forest hiking—meet wellness needs across all age groups. Featured offerings include traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy experiences that rely on Flower Expo culture and local medicinal resources such as Dendrobium catenatum, as well as quiet restorative spaces themed around “sentdown youth” culture, combining ecological healing with cultural nourishment. Nearby recuperation bases—such as Yiqin Garden Resort and Baodao Forest Hengshan Hotel—offer “forest oxygen bar” rooms and wetlandview rooms, along with customized medicinal cuisine and healthmanagement services. Together these form an integrated “stay–nurture–explore” wellness chain, making the resort a preferred shorttrip wellness and leisure destination for residents of the Yangtze River Delta metropolitan area.
