Jing’an Temple

Jing'an Temple, a famous ancient Buddhist temple in Jiangnan, is one of the earliest Buddhist temples in the Shanghai. It was first built in the tenth year of the Sun Quan Emperor of the Three Kingdoms (247 AD) and has a history of more than 1770 years. In the first year of the Song Dynasty's Xiangfu period (1008 AD), it was renamed Jing'an Temple. In the ninth year of the Southern Song Dynasty's Jiading period (1216 AD), it was relocated to its current location and has since been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. In 1998, it underwent large-scale reconstruction, and the ancient temple has now become more magnificent, grand, and harmonious, presenting itself as a holy site of Buddhist culture.

Jing'an Temple follows the "Song architectural style" and adopts roof ridges, projecting eaves, and dougong decorations. It uses imported teak from Myanmar as the material for the temple's structure, with yellow and dark gray copper tiles on top. Based on these features, distinctively Buddhist patterns such as elephants, Dharma wheels, and lotus flowers are carved. The layout follows the traditional Chinese architectural style, combining gates, halls, and corridors. The main hall, known as the Daxiong Baodian, adopts a mortise and tenon structure, with not a single nail used in the entire hall, showcasing the wisdom of ancient craftsmen. The main buildings in the temple include the mountain gate, the Vajra pavilion for the permanent residence of the Dharma, the bell tower, the drum tower, the east and west wings (including the Guanyin Hall and the Maitreya Hall), the Daxiong Baodian, the Dharma Hall, the Taifo Hall, the Golden Buddha Hall, the Zhien Pavilion, the Bao'en Pavilion, and the Jing'an Pagoda.

Jing'an Temple houses numerous Buddhist cultural relics, including the stone inscribed by Zhao Dun, son of Emperor Xiaozong of the Song Dynasty, handscrolls by famous calligraphers and painters such as Su Shi, Wen Zhengming, Chen Jiru, Wu Changshuo, Zhang Ruitu, Yi Bingshou, and the Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics. It also contains artworks by many famous figures such as Zhang Daqian and Wang Yiting, as well as a large bell cast in the second year of the Ming Hongwu era (1369 AD), and various Buddha statues made of stone carvings, bronze castings, gilded gold, white porcelain, and lacquer. Strolling through the temple, one can not only appreciate the charm of ancient Chinese architecture and sculpture but also experience the profound Buddhist culture and artistic charm of China.
