Introduction:
Shanghai Mint Co., Ltd. dates back to Shanghai Mint founded in 1921. The Shanghai Mint Museum, opened in December 2005, has a display area of about 800 square meters and more than 1,000 artifacts on display in the Modern Minting Craft Hall and the Red Currency Hall. It showcases the history of minting craft since modern China and the unique charm of the money culture.
The Shanghai Mint Museum at Shanghai Mint Co., Ltd., a Shanghai Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the Municipal Level by the Suzhou Creek, has a display area of about 800 square meters. It comprises three exhibition halls, i.e., the Modern Minting Craft Hall, the Contemporary Treasures Hall and the Bowker’s Coin Collection Hall. The 1,000-plus exhibits on display here outline the development trajectory of Chinese minting craft from the past to present.
The museum displays not only coins and molds produced by the former Central Mint before Shanghai’s liberation in 1949, but also many fine modern coined artifacts, such as ordinary commemorative coins, commemorative coins made of precious metal, the “gold-inlaid-with-jade” medals of the Beijing Olympics and a variety of commemorative medals, as well as the Manual Carving Technique for Coin-making, which is included in Shanghai’s list of intangible cultural heritage. The museum also provides a range of thematic programs of study and lectures open to the public.
