Introduction:
The Shanghai Shipyard can be traced back to Xiangsheng Shipyard, founded by a British businessman in 1862. It is a cradle of modern Chinese ship building and repairing and where the 10,000-ton “Shaoxing” steamer for export built after the founding of the P.R.C. was launched. More than a century later, it pulled off a turnaround. The shipyard was relocated in its entirety in 2005. The industrial estate began its transformation into a vibrant financial center. The slipway site and the engine building shop, as historic sites, were retained and renovated. World-renowned architect Kengo Kuma presided over this renovation project. The engine building shop, 200 meters long and 30 meters tall with a net interior height of 26 meters, was an enormous open-plan space. Upon renovation, the facility includes a 26,000-square-meter fashion and art commercial center, including an 800-seat medium-sized art theater, the “1862 Fashion and Art Center” and a 16,000-square-meter immersive art commercial space. With a mix of functions, such as shopping, leisure, literature and art, performance, exhibition and tourism, MIFA 1862 has become “a never-ending stage, non-stop exhibition and never-fading fashion” of Shanghai.
