Huangpu District

The Bund

The Bund, located on the banks of the Huangpu River in the Huangpu District of Shanghai, offers a glimpse into the former Shanghai International Settlement and serves as the starting point of modern Shanghai. Spanning 1.5 kilometers, it stretches from East Yan'an Road in the south to the Waibaidu Bridge in the north, with the Huangpu River to the east and the former financial and trade institutions of old Shanghai to the west. Since Shanghai became a trading port, foreign banks, trading houses, clubs, and newspapers have gathered here, making the Bund the financial center of China and even the Far East. Today, 52 diverse neoclassical buildings still stand tall on the Bund, known as the " Exotic building clusters in the Bund of Shanghai," representing important historical landmarks and architectural symbols of modern China.

Furthermore, the Bund is an important birthplace of modern art in China, leading the city's development in art publishing, cultural research, film production, commercial advertising, photography exhibitions, and more. Walking along the Waitanyuan, Jiushi Art Museum, Dongyi Art Museum and other art venues, you can truly feel the city's artistic life and spiritual context for hundreds of years.

In addition, the Bund offers a delightful fusion of culinary experiences hidden in old buildings, exquisite delicacies on terraces, and joyful gatherings in restaurants. The riverside restaurants provide excellent views of the Huangpu River scenery. From local Shanghainese cuisine to Cantonese, Italian, French, and German dishes, the diversity of cuisines is truly an "exhibition of international delicacies," allowing one to not only indulge in delicious food but also savor the blending of global cultures.

At the end of the Bund stands the Waibaidu Bridge, located at the junction of the Suzhou River and the Huangpu River. It is China's first fully steel riveted bridge and the only remaining unequal-height truss structure bridge. With its rich history and unique design, it has become one of the iconic buildings of modern Shanghai. It carries the memories of several generations of Shanghai residents and witnesses the tremendous changes the city has undergone.
