The Shanghai Museum is a world-renowned top-tier museum of ancient Chinese art. It was established in 1952, with its predecessor dating back to the Asian Society of Shanghai Museum founded in March 1874. As one of the first national key museums jointly built by the central and local governments, the first national-level museums, and the first national key protection units for ancient books, the Shanghai Museum has a collection of over 1.02 million cultural relics, including over 145,000 precious artifacts. The collection includes 33 categories of cultural relics, covering various representative objects of outstanding traditional Chinese culture, making it one of the most comprehensive museums of ancient Chinese art in the world.
The overall architecture of the venue combines a square base and a protruding circular shape, symbolizing the Chinese concept of "heaven is round and the earth is square." With the mission of creating a "spiritual home" for Chinese culture and an "encyclopedia" of human civilization, the Shanghai Museum has established multiple venues and exhibition halls, including the Ancient Chinese Bronze Gallery, Ancient Chinese Sculpture Gallery, Ancient Chinese Ceramics Gallery, Gallery of Ancient Chinese Calligraphy, and Gallery of Ancient Chinese Seals. Through core functions such as collection, preservation, research, exhibition, and dissemination, it continuously provides the public with deeper and more meaningful experiences in education, appreciation, reflection, and knowledge sharing.
The Shanghai Museum East is located at the bustling intersection of Dingxiang Road and Century Avenue in Pudong New Area. As a representative of the new generation of museums in Shanghai, it is enormous in size, comparable to an "aircraft carrier-level" museum. Unlike the monumental architecture of the Shanghai Museum on the People's Square, the urban and open nature of the Shanghai Museum East is its prominent feature. The facade of the building resembles the waves of the sea, reflecting both the geographical location and cultural character of Shanghai as a meeting point of land and sea, as well as symbolizing the enterprising spirit of "embracing all rivers" and "leading the tide". As another important cultural landmark in Pudong New Area, the Shanghai Museum East, together with the Oriental Art Center and the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, forms a cluster of cultural facilities with international influence. At the same time, the Shanghai Museum East and the Shanghai Museum on the People's Square complement each other, forming an overall pattern of "one entity, two pavilions, east-west linkage, clear characteristics, and complementary integration" for the Shanghai Museum.
