"Shanghai, a Century of China". Shanghai is well-known as a key to understanding modern China, but the urban context and cultural heritage of Shanghai are even longer and richer.
The Shanghai History Museum (Shanghai Revolution Museum) displays the "Ancient Shanghai" and "Modern Shanghai" sections, following the principle of "city history as the main thread, revolutionary history as the focus." It succinctly presents the 6000 years of history and dramatic changes that Shanghai has experienced within its current administrative area of 6000 square kilometers, showcasing important milestones and significant revolutionary historical events in the city's development throughout various historical periods. It embodies ancient culture, Jiangnan culture, the unique local culture of Shanghai, and the red culture of revolution.
As the only comprehensive museum reflecting the local history of Shanghai, the Shanghai History Museum has a total collection of approximately 110,000 exhibits, including paintings, metalwork, ceramics, crafts, seals, documents, printing, textiles, stone carvings, coins, photographs, paper cutting, stamps, records, and other miscellaneous items. In recent years, the museum has held numerous temporary and traveling exhibitions, such as "Sun Yat-sen and Shanghai - Exhibition of Cultural Relics and Archives," "Modern Metropolis - Exhibition of Shanghai Social Scenes," and "Eastward Expansion - Exhibition of European Porcelain," which have received positive social responses.
The museum building, originally the Shanghai Race Club, was completed in the 1930s. It is located in the People's Square Historical and Cultural Area, an excellent historical building in Shanghai and one of the landmarks of old Shanghai. After renovation and transformation, the overall architectural complex consists of the East Building (formerly the Shanghai Race Club Building), the West Building (formerly the Shanghai Race Club Administrative Office Building), and the landscape courtyard between them, centered around a main clock tower, showcasing grandeur. Citizens and tourists can freely enter and exit between the East and West Buildings, taking leisurely strolls, resting, and capturing memorable moments, to closely experience and appreciate the history and charm of this city amidst the immersive cultural atmosphere.
