Shanghai Grand Theatre

The Shanghai Grand Theatre, located in People's Square in Shanghai, is like a crystal palace woven with musical notes. It features the world's most advanced fully automated mechanical stage and is equipped with various complete facilities such as a ticket center, ballet rehearsal hall, orchestra rehearsal hall, VIP lounge, exhibition hall, art shop, café, banquet hall, and parking garage.

With a total investment of 1.2 billion yuan, the Shanghai Grand Theatre was designed by the French architectural design company Jean-Marie Charpentier Architecture. It is the first internationally high-level comprehensive theater built in China. The theater covers an area of 2.1 hectares, with a total construction area of 64,000 square meters and a height of 40 meters. It houses three theaters: a large, medium, and small one.

Since its official opening on August 27, 1998, the Shanghai Grand Theatre has welcomed numerous world-class performing groups and renowned artists from home and abroad. From the only domestic grand slam by the three great tenors, Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and José Carreras, to the complete lineup of the four major European opera genres, as well as international top-notch art troupes such as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Opera House, Paris National Opera, Bolshoi Theatre, Mariinsky Theatre, La Scala, and many well-known artists from home and abroad have brought countless unforgettable moments to the audience on this stage.

In 2002, the Shanghai Grand Theatre made history by staging the original classic musical "Les Misérables", followed by the Chinese premiere of several world-class original musicals. At the same time, the Shanghai Grand Theatre is committed to promoting the traditional Chinese opera genre of Jingju (Peking Opera) and actively provides a showcase platform for national-level fine productions and local ethnic arts. Since 2011, it has continuously launched the series of performances "Discover the Most Beautiful · Chinese Original Fine Productions in Shanghai". With a total of over 12,200 shows and 14.1 million audience members, the Shanghai Grand Theatre has become a platform for showcasing world-class artistic works, an exchange platform for international artistic activities, and a platform for promoting public welfare art education.
