Jinchao 8 Lane is located in the Hongkou 18th Street neighborhood. The site on the north side of the base consists of approximately 15,000 square meters of historical buildings. As a large-scale restoration project of Shanghai's original site, it has been rejuvenated and transformed into an immersive cultural and artistic experience space with a unique Shanghai-style of Today, sparking the revival of the historical commercial street of North Sichuan Road.
North Sichuan Road gradually developed since the opening of the Songhu Railway in the late 19th century, and for over a century, it has retained the memory of being one of Shanghai's three major commercial streets. It has also accumulated a profound modern historical and cultural heritage due to the activities of many libraries, printing houses, and literati. Literary figures such as Lu xun, Qu Qiubai, and Ding Ling have all stayed here, and the former location of the Commercial Press Hongkou Branch (now Chen Yun's "1925 Bookstore") is not far away. In 1912, Wu Shiguang, Liu Haisu, Wang Yachen, and others founded the Shanghai Art Academy of Painting (later renamed Shanghai Fine Arts School) at No. 8 Zhapu Road, opening the first page of Chinese modern art education history.
Since its opening in November 2021, Jinchao 8 Lane has become a urban hotspot for experiencing the trend of life in Shanghai. It takes the "Shanghai-style alley" as its carrier, integrating life trends, allowing tradition and modernity, Chinese trends and international trends, classics and the future to coexist. Among the 60 Shikumen buildings and 8 independent buildings in Jinchao 8 Lane, there are both the refined and luxurious century-old mansions like "Yingchuan Jilu" and the historical Shikumen alley community "Gongyi Lane" that witnessed historical changes, as well as the fusion of Chinese and Western elements in "Yihong Garden" and other excellent historical preservation buildings.
The No. 2 building of Jinchao 8 Lane adopts a large number of transparent glass curtain walls, forming a transparent volume that connects the old buildings on both sides. The hidden "Yingchuan Jilu" in the back lane occasionally reveals delicate historical features to North Sichuan Road. Under the night sky, the warm light emanating from the walls creates a light and visual effect, allowing visitors to shuttle between the present and the past in the multiple reflections of images.
