Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum

The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum is located in the historic and cultural area of Tilanqiao in Hongkou District. It is the only museum in China that reflects the historical traces of Jewish refugee life during World War II. In 2007, the museum was established with the former site of the Ohel Moshe Synagogue as its core, narrating the history of Jewish refugees from Europe in the 1930s and 1940s who came to Shanghai to escape Nazi persecution and shared hardships with the Chinese people.

After the completion of its expansion in December 2020, the museum covers an area of over 4,000 square meters. Through nearly a thousand precious historical artifacts and documents, over 160 vivid personal stories, more than 10 reconstructed scenes, and the "Shanghai Jewish Refugee Name List Wall" engraved with 18,578 names, it vividly and authentically reproduces the living scenes of over 20,000 European Jewish refugees living in harmony with the local residents during the 1930s and 1940s. The permanent exhibition in the museum consists of six parts: "Escape to Shanghai," "Life in Exile," "Mutual Assistance," "Parting after the War," "Special Connections," and "Sharing the Future." Through abundant historical materials, scene reproductions, and technological means, it truthfully presents the history of European Jewish refugees seeking refuge in Shanghai during World War II and vividly interprets the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind.

The Ohel Moshe Synagogue is located within the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum. It is a three-story building with a green brick wall and a red brick sloping roof, representing one of the only two surviving former Jewish synagogue sites in Shanghai. In 1927, Russian Jews jointly raised funds to build the Ohel Moshe Synagogue. During World War II, it became a gathering place and venue for religious ceremonies for Jewish refugees seeking shelter in Shanghai. Since the reform and opening up, many foreign visitors have come to this building every year to visit. Its historical background has attracted attention, and it was officially recognized as an excellent historical building in Shanghai in 2005 and as a cultural heritage protection unit in 2014.
