When actors go on strike, how can the director finish a performance with the help of a volunteer?

The answer is revealed in the comedy "Fish and Fowl," which is now being staged at Theater Young in Yangpu District.

The play is written and directed by actor Wang Zichuan, who played the lead role when it premiered in 2012. It is now being presented by Beijing-based DrumTower West Theater.

Jin Yan stars in the latest production of the play in Shanghai. Jin is better known as Jin Guangfa, a well-known short comedy video creator.

The story begins with four actors going on strike, forcing the director to finish the performance with the help of a volunteer.

As the performance progresses, the stopgap actor begins to disregard the script in favor of his own originality, resulting in a reversal of the show.

The play is known for its inventiveness and vivid imagination. Amid the laughter, the creator shows the audience his honest and bold attitude toward the world and his inner self.

"Fish and Fowl" is the third production by DrumTower West Theater that Theater Young has presented this year in its 168-seat Green Box.

The previous two plays are the monodrama "Listen to Your Inner Ape," based on Franz Kafka's 1917 novel of the same name, and "Le Trio en mi bemol," adapted from French director éric Rohmer's theatrical comedy of the same name.
