Here you can search for the footprints of the past "Shenbao" newspaper, visit the shadows of the foreign firms a hundred years ago, and experience the different styles of architecture, whether exquisite, grand, classical, or simple. Along the way, you can come to the iconic landscape of the Bund - the Customs House, where you can gaze upon the towering clock tower and the world-famous clock, and listen to the ancient and profound chimes that ring on the hour.
Nowadays, the numerous sampans on the Huangpu River have already transformed into ferry boats for touring the river in the changing times. Walking south along the Huangpu River from Jin Niu Square, you will arrive at Shiliupu Pier, which has a history of over a hundred years. It used to be the largest dock in the Far East and the water gateway of Shanghai, as well as the earliest dock in Shanghai. From here, boarding a boat and sailing downstream, you will be greeted by the diverse and well-arranged Western-style buildings on the Bund, and the beautiful scenery of the Huangpu River will also unfold before your eyes.
Route: Former site of Shenbao Building → Customs House → Pudong Development Bank → Huangpu River tour
Former site of the Customs House
The Declaration Building was built in 1918. It is a five-story reinforced concrete structure with a neoclassical decorative style, reflecting a modern European architectural design. The exterior walls are adorned with patterns at the lower eaves and pilasters. This building is historically known as the birthplace of the "Declaration" as mentioned in textbooks.
Opening hours: Daily from 8:30 am to 11:00 pm.
Customs Building
The architectural style of the Customs House is unique, consisting of two parts: east and west. The east side faces the Huangpu River and the main building has 8 floors. On top of that, there is a four-faced clock tower that is 3 stories high. This design not only increases the visual height of the building but also provides a landmark for the ships on the river.
Opening hours: Not open to the public.
The building of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, formerly known as the HSBC Building, is located in a west-to-east orientation. The construction of the building started in 1921 and was once referred to as "the most exquisite architecture from the Suez Canal to the Bering Strait in the Far East."
Opening hours: 09:00-16:00 daily (the exterior of the building is open all day, while access to the interior is limited to business transactions only).
