Introduction:
Founded in 2010, the Rockbund Art Museum is a museum of contemporary art in the Bund, Shanghai. Located within the premises of a protected historical building of Art Deco style, it is one of the first modern museums in China. The Rockbund Art Museum was officially registered as a private non-business organization in 2019.
Unlike long-burdened continental and national art institutions, the Rockbund Art Museum is developing a maritime vision of contemporary art. We are committed to exploring the importance of oceans and archipelagoes in Asia and providing richer insights into current artistic challenges, practices and networks. We want to establish constructive contradictions between various parts of Asia and between global cultures, provide artists, researchers and curators with a space for free expression, and immerse ourselves in subtle yet strong experiences together with the audience.
Reputed for our unique curation approach, we are conceiving a range of art programs, from research to vicarious learning and from exhibition production to unexpected pan-performing practices. We seek to reshape local history while responding to global artistic challenges and social variations by supporting audacious practices of contemporary art.
We believe that what exchange does is exactly to play this key role of facilitating the process of broader transformation and build a trans-regional, international, interdisciplinary partnership network. Through this process, we seek to establish wide and deep connections with our audience, with diverse groups of people, and with social and cultural organizations. With generous support from the board of directors, patrons and the advisory committee, we observe, learn and keep seeking opportunities for developing art programs and making breakthroughs, with a view to pursuing a unique vision of life.
