Unlike other large comprehensive theaters in Shanghai, Nine Trees Future Art Centre cleverly integrates natural landscapes, architectural design, art exhibitions, and interactive experiences with the audience, creating an "art complex" composed of diverse spaces such as theaters, waterfronts, and forests. It has become a beautiful, distinctive, ecologically friendly, and internationally oriented cultural and ecological destination in the Nine trees cultural ecosystem.
Nine Trees Future Art Centre has three indoor theaters: large, medium, and small, as well as two outdoor theaters: Forest and Waterfront. It also has a multi-functional art and cultural activity space and an extended performance space, hosting various forms of art and cultural performances and activities, collectively building a "24-hour all-weather art community." The large theater is equipped with world-class sound and stage technology, while the Multi-functional Theater meets the needs of various performances and art activities with its flexible and versatile spatial layout. The Starry Sky Small Theater provides a unique experience for the audience to feel the charm of art up close with its cozy and compact design style. The Waterfront Theater and Forest theater allow the audience to enjoy performances while experiencing the breath and vitality of nature. The art and cultural space and the extended performance space regularly present interactive performances, paired with coffee, drinks, and themed exhibitions.
As an emerging art space in the “Five New Cities”, Nine Trees Future Art Centre strives to synchronize the works of top international artists and bring world-class performances to the doorstep. At the same time, Nine Trees Future Art Centre undertakes the mission of inheriting and innovating local theatrical genres, popularizing traditional music, and nurturing young artists. It collaborates with Shanghai Opera Art Center and other regional troupes to conduct public opera workshops. From free public art popularization lectures and appreciation sessions of masterpieces by renowned artists to "Qingyin Concerts" featuring famous singers and "opera highlights" featuring a collection of classical pieces, the "Hundred Performances by a Hundred Future Masters" is a public welfare brand initiated by Nine Trees Future Art Centre, allowing a wide audience to step into the theater, gain in-depth understanding of classical music, and incubate "future masters," providing a high-quality dream stage for young artists, promoting the coexistence of public welfare and art education, and empowering the urban art ecology.
In 2024, Nine Trees Future Art Centre launched the annual self-produced play "Spring Breeze." In a multi-story space of 2,000 square meters, it created an immersive resident theater using the 360° multi-linear exploration mode favored by young audiences. Set in the late period of the Anti-Japanese War under the rule of the Wang Jingwei’s Puppet Government in Shanghai, it cleverly combines historical reality with artistic fiction, presenting the audience with a gripping journey of red patriotism.
