Dongping National Forest Park covers an area of about 40,000 mu and is the largest artificial forest in the Shanghai area. It has abundant flora and fauna resources and natural landscapes. It is a comprehensive tourist destination that combines ecological tourism, leisure fitness, and popular science research. It is also the host of the 10th China Flower Expo. The park is densely forested, with a negative oxygen ion content of up to 1,500-20,000 per cubic centimeter. The temperature in summer is usually 2 to 3 degrees Celsius lower than the outside world, and the suitable days for tourism throughout the year reach more than 300.
The history of Dongping Forest is closely related to the changes of Chongming Island. As part of the Yangtze River alluvial plain, Chongming Island has formed its current ecological environment through centuries of natural evolution and artificial management. This forest park began large-scale afforestation in the 1950s and is one of the important early practices of ecological protection in China. Decades of cultivation have transformed this area from barren land to a thriving forest, making it one of the successful examples of greening in Shanghai.
The park relies on its forest advantages to create a "Butchart-style" sea forest garden, with themed flower gardens such as orchid garden, lotus garden, cherry forest, fern garden, garden of Chinese wisteria, and a kilometer-long purple wisteria corridor. There are also scenic spots such as Maple Forest at Dusk, Drizzle in the Cedar Forest, Deep in the Jungle, Flower and Creek, and the Dream Come True Sea, forming a park with unique features where every step is a scenery.
There are more than a dozen entertainment projects in the forest park, including pirate ship, elevated car, swing chair, and dragon slide for young people, as well as shark reef battle, carousel, self-controlled aircraft, forest rail small train, and indoor children's playground for children. There are also team-building activities such as forest cycling, shared boating, and barbecue camping. You can feed black swans and goldfish on the water deck, have close encounters with roe deer at the Deer Garden, admire the stunning scene of peacocks flying in the Peacock Garden, watch 5D movies at the immersive science exhibition hall in the Forest Journey, and surprises are everywhere.
